If you missed the Multifamily Mastery Meetup this month (6/27), you missed out on a great learning opportunity and high-level networking. This month we featured Rob Jacobs who spoke about his experience as a lawyer in the real estate space from small multi to syndications.
Rob concentrates his practice on business, real estate, tax and estate planning matters. He serves as outside general counsel to many small businesses and entrepreneurs, handling a wide variety of legal matters. He provides advice related to all aspects of real estate transactions, including purchases and sales, leases, and financing matters. His tax background enables him to provide sophisticated planning and advice in connection with both business and real estate, as well as clients' personal estate planning.
During the conversation, Rob continually circled back to the importance of diligence. He mentioned all of the most successful operators and clients he works with are extremely diligent and ensure their projects are up to snuff. This is especially relevant lately as it is difficult to make deals work. In a tough environment like this, it's easy to be overly aggressive and overlook problems or look at them with rose eyes glasses, instead of performing the proper diligence.
Here are some major takeaways we learned:
Be DILIGENT in all facets
You're strength is determined by your team
Be creative - think about different structures for doing a deal - solo, JV, syndicate
Every deal will have problems
You can never be too careful
Do what you love
